A Stretch of the Imagination
I’ve been practicing the art of Iyengar Hatha yoga for over 20 years. While living in India I had the privilege of studying at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, home and work place of the founder, B.K.S. Iyengar.
The practice of yoga is quite different in India; it is typically practiced in combination with a spiritual faith. Like there practice of yoga in India, I focus on the subtleties of each asana, however, I do not include the spiritual aspects.
I chose Hatha Yoga for its slower pace and attention to detail; it is has played a large role in the foundation of my physical, mental and emotional health. I am grateful for all that it’s given, especially those times when I’ve been able to feel more true to who I am; feeling a sense of calmness, awareness, focus and gentleness. Focusing on our true nature is what I refer to as a stretch of the imagination. Incorporating this concept and imagery to the practice of yoga, can provide opportunities to connect and create positive changes in life.
Studies show that in using the imagination, we are capable of strengthening our ability to visualize an outcome, such as healing of the mind and body. In the practice of yoga, we are capable of not only stretching the imagination to visualize healing, but also to visualize ourselves in loving and professional ways. The internal process of healing distorted thoughts and feelings through visualization can only have a positive effect on our external world.
When yoga was first formed, the original practice included physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels to describe the human system, only that these aspects were not viewed separately, but rather as one. Using the imagination to visualize and understand our true nature, is in alignment with the original yogic structure. This might be too confusing, so i will go back to describing the human system as the four levels mentioned above. The only point I am trying to make is that, we are only as true on one level as we are on the other three. In other words, all levels effect one another. Our focus needs to be deeper than just the physical body - this way we can discover the truth on all levels.
I invite you to explore this unique approach to yoga in all the ways that are true for you. Discovering what we are and what we are capable of, is a stretch of the imagination.
